Potential foster parents can be single, married, or partnered couples. They can be renters or homeowners. In addition to the basic foster parent qualifications, our program requires foster parents who have additional skills or training.
Because we work with children who commonly have a history of abuse, neglect or trauma...
Therapeutic foster parents should be aware of youth issues and have experience with behaviorally challenged youth. Good candidates also exhibit patience, be consistent, set good boundaries, and have the ability to stay calm during a crisis.
Additionally, our kids may have some mental health diagnosis, therefore we look for people...
...who have a willingness to be part of a team, to learn and take additional training. We need our foster parents to have or develop organizational skills to handle medicine logs, schedules, and provide a stable home environment.
Most of all, Friends of Youth desires foster parents who will be able to provide a loving home that assists the foster children in preparation for adult life. This means encouraging life skills and supporting good decisions.
