Position Title

    On-Call / Relief Shelter Staff - The Landing


    Support young adults in emergency shelter – Landing Overnight Staff

    Come support young adults age 18-24 as they work to get stable and transition out of
    homelessness. Friends of Youth operates the only young adult shelter in East King
    County and we need your help. Do you enjoy watching movies, playing board games,
    serving homemade meals and talking with a diverse group of young people? If so, we
    have a great job for you here at Friends of Youth. Join “The Landing” team as an
    overnight staff and get to know some of the most amazing young people you will ever

    to help address homelessness in our community. Typical shelter shifts are from 8-
    Midnight or 8:30 pm – 8:30 am, 7 nights a week, 365 days a year.


    A. Direct Service
        1. Responsible for the security of the facility during shift.
        2. Responsible for knowing the whereabouts of guests at all times during shelter.
        3. Respect the confidentiality of each guest and/or their family.
        4. Provide a safe, caring and non-judgmental environment for guests.
        5. Respect differences in cultural, social, sexual and religious background of each
        6. Monitor laundry and shower use.
        7. Helps to serve dinner and breakfast daily for young adults.
        8. Report extraordinary changes in guests’ behavior or situation to Program
        Coordinator and/or Case Manager.
        9. Hold and secure guests’ prescription medicines and prohibited items in a safe
        secure location during shelter.

    B. Placement Tasks
        1. Check guests into shelter during scheduled times.
        2. Initiate orientation and intake paperwork for any young adult who staying at    
        shelter for the first time.

    C. Security Checks
        1. Check that all doors are locked and secured at the beginning of all shifts.
        2. Conduct walk-throughs of areas surrounding The Landing.
        3. Conduct searches of each guests’ belongings at check-in to ensure the removal
        of any prohibited items.

    D. Laundry
        1. Wash, dry, and fold used towels and guests’ laundry each night.
        2. Collect dirty towels and blankets each morning and take to laundry room. Start
        one load of laundry before leaving shift.

Required Skills and Qualifications

    A. Education and Experience
        1. A Bachelor's Degree in the Social Sciences field is strongly preferred.
        2. At least 21 years of age.
        3. Must have Red Cross First Aid/CPR card and Blood Borne Pathogens
        Certification or obtain them within 30days of hiring.
        4. Must pass TB screening.
        5. Must successfully pass criminal history check (WAC 388-73-030).
        6. Education or experience in cultural competency.

    B. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
        1. Ability to develop warm and open relationships with young adults.
        2. Ability to observe and discuss behavior problems and suggest appropriate
        3. Ability to act as a role model.
        4. Ability to work in a setting that can be highly stressful.
        5. Ability to interact with volunteers and provide leadership.
        6. Ability to work collaboratively with a variety of organizations.
        7. Ability to work shifts on short notice.
        8. Ability to work late hours. Shifts are primarily in the late evening (8pm –
        11:30pm) or overnight (8:30pm-8:30am).
